The Mido Multifort began in 1934 with a practical brief: resist water, shocks, and magnetism without giving up the manners of an everyday wristwatch. That sturdy streak still connects a family spanning vintage round cases, modern striped-dial automatics, and chronographs—not one fixed size or mechanical recipe.

Many contemporary Multiforts are recognizable by vertical Geneva stripes across the dial, substantial hands, and clearly marked hours. Earlier modern automatics and later Caliber 80 models can look closely related, but the latter bring an approximately 80-hour power reserve; day-and-date layouts are another familiar feature, rather than a rule across the range. Chronographs add a distinctly busier dial and pushers, while vintage examples belong to a different world of proportions and dial furniture.

Two named branches make the family’s breadth particularly clear. The Multifort TV Big Date uses a television-shaped case and a prominent date display at twelve. The round Multifort Patrimony takes a more retrospective route, with a domed sapphire crystal and a pulsometer scale around the dial—quite a different expression from the striped, sportier Multiforts.

What owners love

  • On the classic Multifort automatic models with vertical Geneva stripes, the dial is the detail owners keep coming back to: the stripes change noticeably with the light, and the applied markers give it more depth than a flat dial.
  • Owners of the Multifort Powermatic 80 versions appreciate the roughly 80-hour power reserve, and many report steady everyday timekeeping from the Caliber 80. That movement benefit doesn’t apply to every older Multifort.

Common Criticisms

  • The classic 42mm Multifort automatic can wear larger than its diameter suggests, particularly on smaller wrists. Owners point to the broad dial and projecting lugs, so it isn’t the most discreet fit despite the fairly straightforward case shape.
