MB&F treats the watch case as a starting point, not a boundary. Founded in 2005 by Maximilian Büsser, the Swiss brand takes its name from “Maximilian Büsser & Friends”: a network of independent watchmakers, designers, and specialists whose contributions are credited rather than hidden. That collaborative approach gives its mechanical experiments a distinctly personal character.

The Horological Machine collection is where the outlines get strange. The HM4 Thunderbolt carries two jet-engine-like pods, one displaying hours and minutes, the other power reserve. The HM7 Aquapod arranges its movement vertically beneath a domed crystal, with a central flying tourbillon and a rotating bezel circling outside the case. These are watches conceived in three dimensions, with the mechanics helping determine the shape.

The Legacy Machine collection takes a different route: round cases, classical references, and movements brought forward into view. The Legacy Machine No. 1 suspends its balance above two white dials; the Legacy Machine Perpetual, developed with Stephen McDonnell, rethinks the perpetual calendar around a mechanical processor.
