TSAR

The Marathon TSAR was originally developed to meet the rigorous demands of military search and rescue operations, earning its reputation through actual deployment with Canadian and US forces. Its 36mm case makes it a rare find among modern tool watches, appealing to those who prefer authentic military heritage in a compact format. This model’s blend of field-tested reliability and manageable size sets it apart from larger, more commercial offerings in the Marathon lineup.

Key references include the WW194007 (36mm quartz) and its automatic sibling, but the classic TSAR is defined by its Swiss-made quartz movement—chosen for accuracy in critical situations. Expect a screw-down crown, sapphire crystal, and 300m water resistance, making it a genuine diver’s watch despite its modest proportions. Luminous tritium gas tubes ensure constant legibility, a detail that collectors value for both function and authenticity.

Prices vary based on condition, production year, and original kit—military-issued examples with full paperwork or government markings command a premium. Civilian models are more accessible, but all benefit from Marathon’s strict quality control. When buying, check for intact tritium tubes and original bezel action, as replacement parts can affect collectability. The 36mm TSAR is ideal if you’re seeking military provenance without sacrificing wearability.
