The Marathon GSAR is a search-and-rescue diver with little interest in looking civilian: a tall steel case, deeply knurled crown, and tritium-lit dial give it an unmistakably equipment-first character. Enthusiasts love it for much the same reason—it feels purpose-built, with a bezel you can grip and a dial that stays readable without first charging it under a lamp. Marathon is Canadian; the watch is Swiss-made.

The black-dial GSAR is the straightforward choice for that instrument-panel look; the white-dial Arctic offers a distinctly different face without softening the watch. On older examples, the tritium deserves attention: its output fades with age, so nighttime brightness won’t necessarily match a newer watch. Also distinguish the automatic GSAR from the closely related quartz TSAR. And take the case height seriously: the 41mm diameter tells only half the story of how this watch wears.

What owners love

  • The tritium tubes make it easy to read in the middle of the night without charging the lume first. Owners particularly appreciate that the hands and hour markers remain visible hours after the lights go out.
  • The deeply knurled bezel and large crown are genuinely easy to grip, even with wet hands. The bezel has a firm, positive action that suits the GSAR’s otherwise very no-nonsense feel.
  • The short lugs help the 41mm case fit better than its chunky profile might suggest. Owners often describe it as substantial on the wrist without being excessively wide.

Common Criticisms

  • It’s a tall, heavy watch, and the compact lug span doesn’t disguise that thickness. Owners complain about it catching on cuffs and feeling top-heavy on a loosely worn strap.
