Kuoe’s watches look back to an era when modest case sizes were the rule, not a deliberate statement. Founded in Japan in 2020 and based in Kyoto, the brand takes its cues from vintage European watches, translating their compact proportions and readable dials into everyday pieces. There’s restraint here: narrow bezels, familiar numerals, and room for the dial to breathe.

The Old Smith 90-002 is the clearest expression of that approach. Its 35mm case, Arabic numerals, textured dial, and luminous hands borrow from military field watches without reproducing a particular issued reference. Inside, the automatic Seiko NH38 keeps the display free of a date window. The small diameter matters: it gives the watch the proportions its design vocabulary calls for.

The Royal Smith collection moves toward dressier territory, with applied numerals and more elaborate dial treatments. These watches retain Kuoe’s preference for compact dimensions, but trade the field-watch directness for details that invite a closer look across a café table.
