Autavia

The Heuer Autavia brings a rotating bezel and clear, instrument-like dial to a family that spans hand-wound chronographs, early automatics, and modern revivals. Its name combines “automobile” and “aviation”: first used for a dashboard timer in 1933, it reached the wrist in 1962.

The early wrist chronographs have round cases, prominent pushers, and either two or three registers; the 3646 and 2446 are useful landmarks. Later generations moved toward broader, more angular cases. Automatic versions powered by Caliber 11 or Caliber 12 put the crown on the left and the chronograph pushers on the right—a distinctive layout, not a feature shared by every Autavia. Hand-wound models continued alongside them, so case shape alone does not settle the movement question.

Among later vintage references, the 11063 belongs to the larger automatic generation. The modern Autavia Heuer 02 returns to the round-case, three-register vocabulary with a contemporary automatic movement. Across these generations, bezel scales and dial layouts change the character considerably: elapsed-time markings, hour scales, and differing register arrangements give each version its own working language.
