The Hanhart Preventor puts the German maker’s knack for legibility into a straightforward three-hand watch, without the pushers and timing scales of its better-known chronographs. In the modern Preventor HD12, bold Arabic numerals and cathedral-style hands give that simplicity a distinctive face rather than an anonymous one.

The HD12 is the version to know if this will be a daily wearer: its hardened steel case is intended to resist the small scratches that ordinary steel readily collects, though it isn’t scratch-proof. The black dial gives the clearest instrument-watch impression; blue softens it without changing the layout. Inside, the automatic Sellita SW200-1 is a familiar, serviceable choice. There’s no date window to interrupt the numerals—a small omission that does a lot for the design.
