The Hanhart Pioneer brings the brand’s prewar pilot’s chronographs into an automatic watch, keeping the red chronograph pusher and unusually clear dial that make these watches so recognizable. Its charm is in the working details: large Arabic numerals, two widely spaced registers, and controls designed to be found without fuss.

Start with the Pioneer Mk I if you enjoy a chronograph with a single pusher cycling through start, stop, and reset; choose the Pioneer Mk II if you want separate controls and the ability to restart timing without resetting. The latter’s asymmetrically positioned pushers are deliberate, echoing Hanhart’s early two-pusher chronographs rather than following the usual layout. When trying either, pay attention to how the prominent crown and pushers sit against your wrist—they contribute as much to the wearing experience as the case diameter does.
