Grand Quartz is a name worth untangling: vintage Seiko Grand Quartz and modern Grand Seiko quartz belong to different chapters, rather than one continuous model line. What connects them is an emphasis on quartz precision, paired with the crisp markers and carefully finished dials that make these watches interesting well beyond their movements.

The vintage Grand Quartz ranges emerged in the 1970s, when quartz was still a field of rapid technical development. Numbers such as 4840, 4842, and 4843 help distinguish the earlier watches; the later 9940 and 9943 lead into Twin Quartz territory. That system used two quartz oscillators to compensate for temperature-related variation. Cases, dimensions, and calendar arrangements vary across these generations, so the family name alone tells only part of the story.

Modern Grand Seiko quartz is a separate branch. The SBGN007, for example, belongs to the GMT generation powered by 9F86, with an independently adjustable local-hour hand. Its additional hand and 24-hour scale mark a clear functional departure from the simpler vintage Grand Quartz designs.
