The Grand Seiko 45GS pairs a sharply drawn case with a hand-wound, high-beat movement: a watch whose quiet dial gives little away about the machinery beneath it. Introduced in 1968 and built by Seiko’s Daini factory, it brought a 36,000-vibration-per-hour beat to a slim, manually wound Grand Seiko, with the broad polished planes and crisp edges that make these early cases so satisfying on the wrist.

The choice between 4520-8000 and 4522-8000 is principally about the dial: the former is date-free, while the latter adds a date window at three. Choose the 4520-8000 for uninterrupted symmetry; the 4522-8000 keeps the same restrained character with a useful calendar. Case geometry deserves particular attention here: polishing can soften the boundaries between those flat surfaces. The gold caseback medallion is another detail worth checking, since wear or replacement can leave an otherwise attractive example without that distinctive finishing touch.
