The Royal Oak Offshore Chronograph 26470ST gives you the Offshore’s muscular proportions without moving up to the larger 44mm models. Its octagonal bezel, exposed screws and deeply patterned Méga Tapisserie dial make the family resemblance unmistakable, but the broad stance on the wrist is very much its own.

Introduced in 2014, this generation brought ceramic crowns and chronograph pushers to the 42mm Offshore, replacing the rubber-covered controls of its predecessors. A sapphire caseback also opened up the view of the automatic 3126/3840, including its gold rotor. Those changes make this a useful reference to seek out if you like the earlier Offshore proportions but prefer ceramic touchpoints and a visible movement.

Try it on rather than judging by diameter alone: the substantial case and wide strap give it considerable presence. Examine the ceramic controls for chipped edges, and pay attention to the bezel’s crisp transitions between brushed surfaces and polished bevels—softened edges change this watch’s character.

What owners love

  • The case finishing is a big part of the enjoyment: the brushed steel surfaces and polished bevels catch the light differently as you move your wrist. That contrast is especially noticeable around the bezel and its exposed screws.
  • The rubber strap makes this substantial steel watch more comfortable than its dimensions suggest. Owners who enjoy the fit often describe it as surprisingly wearable once the strap is sized properly.
  • The ceramic crown and chronograph pushers are a welcome detail on the 26470ST. They avoid the worn rubber coverings found on earlier Offshore versions and feel more substantial to operate.

Common Criticisms

  • The 42mm diameter understates how large it wears: the thick case and broad stance give it considerable presence on the wrist. It can feel top-heavy and is awkward under a close-fitting shirt cuff.
  • The date sits noticeably deep below the dial because of the modular chronograph construction. Even with the magnifier, reading it from an angle can be fiddly.
