Originally developed to help astronauts distinguish day from night in space, the Cosmonaute made history in 1962 when Carpenter wore it aboard NASA’s Aurora 7 mission, making it the first Breitling in space. This particular A12019 features a stunning reverse panda dial with crisp white subdials set against a matte black background. Red accents along the slide rule scale and a clean white chronograph seconds hand provide just the right amount of contrast. The dial layout is clean, symmetrical, and uses a full 24-hour display, true to the original spacefaring concept. The tapered baton hands are lume-filled, and the rotating bezel features Breitling’s signature circular slide rule which is a functional flight calculator that can convert units, calculate speed, fuel consumption, and more. Powering the watch is a hand-wound LWO 1873/24 movement, based on the reliable Lemania 1873, modified for the 24-hour format. No date window, no rotor, just a mechanical connection between you and the movement, reinforced by a daily winding ritual. Flip the watch over and you’ll find an engraved caseback with Breitling’s Wings and Anchor logo and a Celsius-to-Fahrenheit conversion scale, a subtle but fitting nod to its utilitarian spirit. The case measures 41.5mm in diameter, 12.7mm thick, with a lug width of 22mm. It wears well, especially on the included leather strap, which suits the aviation aesthetic perfectly. The watch is in good condition with only a few hairline scratches mostly on the caseback, the crystal is flawless and free of scratches, the case and case back are still in great shape. Lume on the hands and the hour markers shows sign of aging, but still fits the overall vintage aesthetics. The watch has been serviced so it will keep great time. Watch comes on OEM Breitling straps and buckle. Although it doesn’t come with original box and paper, a standard watch box will be provided upon purchase.
