Good evening, WatchEx! I've got a backlog to post up (almost done with photos), starting with this neo-vintage stunner: the Zodiac Date AT 879770, 406.13.33 (Red Dot Chronograph.) Whole I often talk about how Christopher Ward was my first big brand crush in the watch industry, Zodiac was the first brand that I really collected heavily. The first Zodiac/Swiss watch I owned was a vintage Zodiac Formula, their version of the Tag Formula - super interesting story there for another time. Before being acquired by Fossil, Zodiac had an extremely rich history as one of the most important brands in Swiss horology. On to the watch at hand. In the 90's, Zodiac used a "point" system to sort of grade and categorize their watches: red meaning sports/professional, silver for professional/dive, gold for "elegant sports." During this era, Zodiac "borrowed" heavily from Tag, as the former Tag CEO Willy Gad Monnier would he the Zodiac ship after his break-up with Tag. This would spark a pretty intense rivalry in the 90's, and led to a ton of awesome watch designs between the two brands. Cram it up your cramhole, Jack Heuer - Zodiac always had more heart. This extremely well-preserved gem from the 90's looks and feels like an affordable Daytona. The two-tone gold plating and white dial work perfectly together, creating a style that'll work just as well with shorts and a shirt as it will in a tux. It's rated for 100m water resistance, powered by the legendary Valjoux 7750, and wears so, so well at just 40mm. I'll let the photos do the rest of the talking, it's just so hard not to babble about such a pretty watch during one of watchmaking's most forgotten time periods. Quick Specs: - Reference: Date AT 879770, 406.13.33 - Scarce model, especially in such great condition. - Stainless Steel, Gold Plating - 40mm Case (wears very well, see wrist shot album below) - ~14mm Case (including box crystal, wears thin) - 47mm Lug to Lug - 20mm Lug Width - 10 bar/100m Water Resistance - Acrylic Box Crystal - Movement: Valjoux 7750 (keeping excellent time) - No service history, but running well enough that I'd wager it's recently been serviced. Smooth winding, power reserve holds up perfectly. - Excellent condition. Unsure on exact year of production, but consider it to be ±30 years old. Some light marks on bracelet links/clasp, few scarce marks on case. Nothing notable for a vintage piece. No discoloration or patina on dial/hands. Clean, clean, clean. - Links to fit 7-7.25" with micro-adjust fully exhausted. - Clasp is largely in great shape, but previous owner bent the sides in a bit to keep the diver's extension from deploying unintentionally.
