Up for sale is a vintage Smiths Deluxe. This is circa 1955/1956, part of the Everest range, in a Dennison aquatite gold case. Watch is running well, and case and crystal are in very good condition, especially considering the age. Strap is non-original. This is one of the larger models in the Deluxe range. Case is 33.5mm, and 11mm thick. 18mm lug width. (Many of the vintage Deluxe models are a 31mm case with 16mm lug width.) Vintage Smiths watches, especially the Deluxe range from this time period, have a huge amount of horological significance, given that a Smiths Deluxe was the first watch to summit Everest in 1953 (not a Rolex, as commonly believed), as well as used on the Fuchs Antartic expedition in 1955. Shortly after the 1953 expedition, Smiths started advertizing their Deluxe models as "Everest" watches. This specimen predates the switch to having branding on the dial. For some interesting read on the history of Smiths and the Everest expedition, see [this article](https://www.outdoorjournal.com/featured/opinion-editorial/rolex-vs-smiths-which-watch-summited-everest-in-1953-putting-a-controversy-to-rest/). There was also a [recent video from the Time Teller about Smiths Deluxe and the Everest expedition](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1JW0aACCxbE).
