The Seiko 62MAS (ref. 6217-8000/8001) is the brand’s first-ever professional dive watch, launched in 1965 for the Japanese Antarctic Research Expedition. Its clean, functional design and historic significance make it a cornerstone for Seiko collectors and the blueprint for later icons like the 6105 and modern Prospex divers. The compact 37mm stainless steel case, original “stoplight” seconds hand, and distinctive applied indices set it apart from later Seiko divers.

Reference 6217-8000 (early) and 6217-8001 (later) differ mainly in caseback engraving and minor dial details, but both house the automatic Caliber 6217A with 150m water resistance—impressive for the era. Originality is a major value driver: untouched dials, bezel inserts, and hands command a premium, as many examples have replacement or faded parts due to hard use. Early “proof” dials and casebacks are especially sought-after.

Expect wide price variation based on condition and completeness; even worn examples have strong demand, but collector-grade pieces with original bracelet, box, and papers are rare. Lume color, caseback engravings, and date wheel font are key authenticity markers. This is a watch where provenance and originality matter more than service history—most have seen action, but few survive in top shape.

オーナーが気に入っている点

  • The faithful vintage-inspired design closely captures the proportions and details of the original 62MAS, making it stand out among modern reissues for its authenticity.
  • The compact 37mm case wears comfortably on a wide range of wrists, a rarity among contemporary dive watches which tend to be much larger.
  • Owners consistently praise the clarity and legibility of the dial and hands, especially appreciating the subtle, well-executed lume that recalls classic Seiko divers.

よくある批評

  • The 6R35 movement is frequently criticized for noticeable positional variance and accuracy issues out of the box.
  • The stock bracelet is described as rattly and feels cheap compared to the case quality, with a clasp that lacks refinement and micro-adjustment.
  • Many are disappointed by the relatively high price compared to other Seiko divers, especially given the basic movement and perceived finishing shortcuts.
