Recordmaster

The Citizen Recordmaster captures a unique chapter in Japanese watchmaking, being Citizen’s first chronograph and a rare example of a vintage, in-house Japanese stopwatch wristwatch. Launched in the 1960s, the Recordmaster is notable for its clean, functional dial and distinctive single-pusher chronograph layout, making it a standout among contemporaries dominated by Swiss brands. Its understated design and historical significance have made it a cult favorite, especially as early Japanese chronographs gain appreciation among collectors.

Most Recordmasters feature a 37mm steel case and run on Citizen’s manually wound caliber 5700, a column-wheel movement prized for its crisp actuation and reliability. Reference numbers are not always clearly marked on the case, but the classic version is easily identified by its single pusher at 2 o’clock and the unique elapsed time bezel. Values can vary based on dial condition, originality of the bezel, and the presence of the original bracelet, all of which are tricky to source given the model’s age and relatively low production numbers.

When considering a Recordmaster, scrutinize the dial printing and hands—these are often replaced during servicing, which impacts collectability. The original bezels are prone to wear and are rarely found in excellent condition; intact examples command a premium. Early Japanese chronographs like this don’t face widespread counterfeiting, but finding a well-preserved, unpolished case and original movement is increasingly difficult. Expect to pay more for examples with strong provenance and matching accessories, as these details drive collector demand for the Recordmaster.
