Introduced in 1967 as part of the 61GS series, this reference captures the point where Grand Seiko’s “Grammar of Design” reached full maturity—confident, precise, and uncompromising. Among vintage GS collectors, the early dial variant is especially prized for its cleaner aesthetics and historical significance. The stainless steel case measures approximately 36.5mm in diameter with a lug-to-lug of around 42–43mm, giving it strong wrist presence without feeling bulky. The architecture is unmistakably Taro Tanaka: sharp, flat planes intersecting with absolute intention, razor-defined edges, and a striking contrast between brushed surfaces and mirror-polished sides. The squared geometry between the lugs and bezel immediately sets it apart, making the case feel both muscular and refined at the same time. What truly elevates this example is its rare early dial configuration. Instead of the later “Hi-Beat 36000” and “Automatic” text, the dial is marked simply with “Grand Seiko” at 6 o’clock. This restraint gives the watch a purity that closely echoes the revered 44GS, and I would argue it’s one of the cleanest automatic Grand Seiko dials ever produced. The silver dial finish is subtle and elegant, paired with multi-faceted baton indices and sharply finished dauphine hands with a fine black stripe for legibility. Inside beats the high-beat automatic Caliber 6145, running at 36,000 vph—a technical achievement that placed Grand Seiko firmly among the world’s elite at the time. Smooth seconds motion, strong accuracy, and robust engineering define this movement, making it as impressive mechanically as it is visually. This example remains in great condition for its age, showing little scratches and no dents. The dial is clean and crisp with no sign of aging, the crystal is clear.
