Before I cared about watches—or thought to care—I bought this one. Not because it was rare or vintage or “Swiss Made” (though it is), but because it looked like something I could wear every day without needing to explain it. Simple. Rugged. Honest. Handsome. I was on my way to vet school — pre-smart watches — and I just loved how it looked. This Wenger was my first “real” watch. No occasion, no fanfare. Just a quiet decision, an early and unknowing expression of taste, identity, and very much a beginning. Years ago I lost this watch, and it took another few years before I unearthed a high-enough resolution photo to figure out what it was and track down the reference. While I still haven’t found the one that accompanied me on 10 years of adventures and milestones, I do make a point of scooping up one of these every time a nice one pops up in good shape, and I take joy in getting to share it with others. Especially those starting their own collecting journey. This is an early example of the 096.0636. Before Wenger refined the reference with full stainless cases, they used a base metal case and bezel—and over the years, this one has aged beautifully. There’s a warmth to the patina of the bezel I’ve never seen, and the tropical dial and tritium numerals are just icing on the cake. See more @waffahousewatches
