Developed in 1958, the Citizen Alarm wasn’t just a novelty complication. At the time, it was a bold and expensive watch—priced close to a new university graduate’s monthly salary—yet it sold extremely well and stayed in production for many years. That kind of longevity only happens when a watch genuinely works, both in design and in everyday use. What makes this watch so charming is how intuitive it feels. The alarm function is displayed through a central indicator disc, so at a glance you immediately understand what it does and how to set it. The two oversized crowns—one at 2 o’clock for the alarm and one at 4 o’clock for time setting—are placed exactly where you expect them to be. There’s no learning curve here, just thoughtful, user-focused design from a time when watches were built to be practical first. The case itself is classic late-1950s Citizen. It measures 34mm in diameter (excluding the crown) with a 42mm lug-to-lug, wears comfortably on the wrist, and maintains a balanced presence thanks to its 12mm overall height including the crystal. An 18mm lug width keeps strap options easy and period-correct. On the wrist, it feels compact, solid, and purposeful—very much in line with how a daily alarm watch was meant to be worn. The alarm mechanism delivers both sound and vibration, making it genuinely useful rather than gimmicky. It’s a simple, effective system that still works today and explains why the Citizen Alarm earned such a strong reputation back in its day. The watch is in great condition, with no scratches nor dents. The crystal is clear and clean, dial has some small marks here and there but overall is clean. It comes on custom leather straps.
