Produced around 1964, this reference marked a major milestone as the first Grand Seiko to feature a date complication, introducing Seiko’s fast-forward date mechanism while maintaining strict chronometer standards. Housed in a beautifully proportioned 36.5–37mm stainless steel case, the 43999 showcases Taro Tanaka’s early Grammar of Design philosophy. The case features broad, flat surfaces and sharp transitions that give the watch a strong yet elegant presence on the wrist. The screw-down caseback is finished with the iconic lion medallion, a symbol of Grand Seiko’s pursuit of accuracy and durability. The silver dial is clean, balanced, and unmistakably mid-1960s Grand Seiko. Depending on the variant, this reference can be found with the highly desirable SD “Special Dial,” fitted with white gold indices, or the AD “Applied Dial” version and this belongs to the latter. Both retain the restrained, purposeful layout that defined early Grand Seiko design, with the date window integrated seamlessly without disrupting symmetry. Powering the watch is the manual-wind Caliber 430, later evolving into the 5722A and 5722B. With 35 jewels and chronometer-rated performance, these movements were engineered to compete directly with the finest Swiss calibers of the era. Reliable, precise, and beautifully constructed, they represent some of Seiko’s finest hand-wound movements. The watch is in great condition showing minor hairline scratches on the case and the caseback fitting for its age. The crystal is flawless, with clean bezel, dial has a small mark at the center but doesn’t detract from the overall beauty. Watch comes fitted on custom rally straps.
