Hi everyone. I just found out that I am going to be a father. So now starts the scramble to thin out my personal collection and start making better financial decisions for what is to come. I have a 1970s Rolex Air King 5500 with a very cool (and very controversial) explorer dial. Let’s be very clear off the bat that this is 99.99% most likely a repainted dial. What little confirmed info there is online about these watches and the inability to actually authenticate a genuine one, almost guarantees that this is the case. Despite this, I have worn and loved this watch for years and it has been a conversation starter multiple times. It runs extremely well and is a great watch overall. With that in mind the price will reflect that. The serial number (according to bobs watches) places this watch at 1979. The case and plexiglass crystal are in extremely good, but clearly worn condition. This watch is not a safe-clean out find that has been sitting for the past 40 years untouched. It has decades of faithful wear, and has the marks to prove it if you’re looking up close. But there are no significant or serious imperfects. Think of a watch that your distinguished grandfather wore every day to work at his company job. The movement runs strong and accurate. I rotate watches every 2-3 weeks and I never have to reset the time due to inaccuracy. It is a cal 1530 movement. It comes with an original Rolex oyster bracelet with rolled links. This needs to be cleaned up. I had it on here at first but preferred a leather strap for the majority of the time I’ve owned it. The service history is unknown, there are no box or papers. But this watch was serviced by the previous owner. He showed me a receipt when I bought it, but that paperwork is long gone. It is most likely due for a tuneup, but again it is running extremely well currently. It has a 34mm case size and is 19mm lug width. It has classic proportions that don’t scream “I’m wearing an expensive watch”. It’s understated and gentlemanly. I have some photos of it on my ~6.75” wrist so you can see the proportions. It will come on a brown leather strap and with the bracelet. Aside from that, I don’t think I have much more info I can give. It’s a beautiful and fun watch, and I hope the next person enjoys it as much as I did! Maybe it will make a great Christmas present for yourself or someone you love.
