[WTS] Grand Seiko 43999 from 1963- recently serviced and refinished
The Grand Seiko 43999 is far more than a vintage timepiece, it is a milestone in Grand Seiko’s story. Released in 1963 as the brand’s first model with a date complication, this 1964 example of the so-called “Self-Dater” represents both a technical breakthrough and a design revolution. This reference was one of the first to embody Taro Tanaka’s visionary “Grammar of Design”, the philosophy that still defines Grand Seiko today. Its broad, multi-faceted lugs, distortion-free mirror finishing, and strong case geometry gave it a modern, architectural presence that set it apart from its contemporaries. Even at 36mm, the 43999 wears larger and more substantial than most watches of its era, a key reason why it remains so highly regarded by collectors. This all original example has just undergone a complete service: • Case: expertly refinished by The Lapinist, restoring sharp lines and brilliant polish true to the original design. • Movement: manual-wind Caliber 430, freshly serviced and running with precision. • Dial: original, and remarkably well preserved. • Caseback: features the iconic lion medallion, with light corrosion but strong detail intact. The 43999 holds a special place in horological history: the first Grand Seiko with a date complication, an early showcase of the design language that defines the brand, and a watch that proved Japan could rival the best Swiss houses of its day. This 1964 Self-Dater is not only a rare collector’s piece but also a beautifully wearable expression of Grand Seiko’s enduring legacy.
