Vulcain’s calling card is a sound, not a silhouette. The Swiss maker, founded in 1858, gave the mechanical alarm wristwatch a distinctive voice with the Cricket in 1947. Its insistent buzz turned a practical complication into the brand’s signature, while its association with American presidents gave this unusually vocal watch a second life as a diplomatic gift.

The Cricket remains the place to start understanding Vulcain. A separate alarm hand lets you set the appointment; the movement supplies the reminder without batteries or electronics. Across vintage examples and later interpretations, restrained dress-watch styling often conceals that extra machinery. The contrast is part of the pleasure: a tidy dial, then a surprisingly forceful interruption from the wrist.

The Nautical, introduced in 1961, took the alarm underwater, pairing it with decompression information on the dial. It is Vulcain at its most technically adventurous. The Skindiver Nautique takes a quieter route into diving, with a rotating bezel, bold luminous markers, and straightforward three-hand functionality.
