A hand-wound chronograph with a column wheel is a good place to meet Sugess. Founded in China in 2010, the brand has made mechanical variety its calling card: vintage-shaped chronographs, moonphase watches, divers, and tourbillons. There isn’t one unmistakable Sugess silhouette; the interest is often in what’s happening beneath the dial.

The chronographs are central to that story. Many use Sea-Gull’s ST1901, a manually wound movement whose architecture descends from the Venus 175. Two-register layouts, contrasting subdials, and tachymeter scales give these watches a distinctly mid-century vocabulary. On versions with exhibition backs, the levers, bridges, and column wheel offer an absorbing counterpoint to the comparatively restrained dial.

The Seaman divers move into familiar rotating-bezel territory, with luminous markers and screw-down crowns. Sugess’s moonphase watches take a dressier direction, pairing the lunar display with calendar indications on some models. Its tourbillons are another substantial branch of the range: open dial apertures put the rotating cage in view, making the mechanism itself the watch’s visual center.
