The Seiko Silverwave rewards a closer look: the name spans early automatic water watches and later quartz models, rather than one fixed design. For enthusiasts drawn to Seiko’s beginnings in underwater watchmaking, the early J12082 is the version to know, with an internal rotating bezel that gives it a distinctly different character from the divers that followed.

Introduced in 1961, that first Silverwave offered 50-metre water resistance, four years before Seiko’s first dedicated dive watch. Its restrained dial and bezel tucked beneath the crystal make it feel as much like an everyday watch as a piece of sporting equipment. Later Silverwaves took the name in other directions, so distinguish an early automatic from a later quartz example before comparing them. On the early bezel-equipped watches, pay particular attention to whether the internal ring turns correctly; it is central to the design, not merely decoration.
