The Seiko SBDX017 is the Marinemaster 300 for anyone who likes a dive watch with real heft and unusually fine finishing. Broad brushed surfaces meet polished case flanks, while the deeply set dial and substantial hands give it a presence that feels quite different from Seiko’s more everyday divers.

Introduced in 2015 as the successor to the SBDX001, it retains the one-piece steel case, Hardlex crystal and automatic 8L35, adding Seiko’s DiaShield surface treatment. It also keeps the older dial layout without the prominent Prospex “X” found on the later SBDX023; that successor brings sapphire and a ceramic bezel, making the choice more than a matter of dial preference.

The case has no removable back, so movement access is through the front—a meaningful distinction when arranging repairs. On the wrist, pay attention to its height and the bracelet’s substantial ratcheting clasp: both are part of the experience, not incidental details.
