The Seiko Fifty Five Fathoms is an enthusiast-made riff on Blancpain’s Fifty Fathoms, built around the Seiko 5 SNZH family rather than a separate factory model. Its charm is the combination of that familiar broad-bezel silhouette with an unpretentious Seiko automatic underneath—a watch shaped as much by the modding community as by its manufacturer.

The black-dial SNZH55 is the familiar starting point, but the name doesn’t identify one fixed configuration: some examples retain the factory dial, while others wear aftermarket dials inspired by the Blancpain. Decide which interpretation you want, then establish exactly what was changed, particularly the dial, hands, crystal, and bezel insert. The 7S36 neither hacks nor hand-winds; that’s normal, not a fault. And with a modified example, the original water-resistance rating isn’t proof that the assembled watch remains watertight.
