The Seiko Captain Willard SLA takes the broad, asymmetric case of the 1970 diver and gives it a more finely finished modern execution. The nickname comes from the Seiko worn by Martin Sheen’s Captain Willard in Apocalypse Now, but the affection runs deeper than the film: that low-slung case and sheltered crown make an unusually purposeful design feel natural on the wrist.

For the closest connection to the original, start with SLA033, Seiko’s 2019 recreation, with its restrained black dial. The later SLA049 brings a textured blue dial and a tribute to Japanese adventurer Naomi Uemura. These SLA models use the 8L35, an important distinction from the more accessible SPB Willards. When comparing examples, pay particular attention to how the bezel’s triangle meets the dial’s twelve-o’clock marker; a small alignment discrepancy can become surprisingly distracting on such a clean, legible face.
