The Seiko Captain Willard SLA draws its name and design from the iconic diver worn by Martin Sheen’s character in “Apocalypse Now,” itself based on the 6105-8110/8119 models issued to US soldiers in Vietnam. This reissue pays homage to that legendary history, updating the classic cushion case silhouette for modern wrists while preserving the unique crown placement and unmistakable vintage cues that have made the original a cult favorite among dive watch collectors.

Current SLA references—most notably the SLA033—differentiate themselves from standard Prospex models through Zaratsu-polished cases, a sapphire crystal, and the high-grade 8L35 automatic movement (essentially a Grand Seiko caliber without finishing). Case size is 42.7mm, but the short lugs keep it wearable. Water resistance is rated to 200 meters, and the dial’s lume is exceptional, true to Seiko’s tool watch legacy. The SLA series is produced in limited runs, which directly affects pricing and secondary market demand.

When shopping for a Captain Willard SLA, note the difference between SLA and lower-priced SPB references: SLA pieces command a premium due to their movement, finishing, and scarcity. Expect higher prices for complete sets and unworn examples, especially for limited editions like the SLA033. Scrutinize case polishing and bracelet condition, as these details matter to collectors and can impact value more than light wear on the crystal or bezel. This is a model where provenance and originality, particularly the correct box and papers, should weigh into your decision.
