Bullhead

The Seiko Bullhead is a cult favorite among vintage chronograph collectors, instantly recognizable by its distinctive case shape that positions the crown and pushers at 12 o’clock. First introduced in the 1970s, it was designed for motorsport timing, and its bold, asymmetric profile reflects that racing pedigree. The Bullhead’s unique design and motorsport legacy make it a standout piece in Seiko’s chronograph history, often sought after for its combination of character and functionality.

The most coveted examples are the 6138-0040 and 6138-0049 references, both powered by the in-house automatic Caliber 6138—a column wheel, vertical clutch movement with a 12-hour chronograph and day-date complication. Variants differ mainly in dial color and regional dial text; the “Speed-Timer” dials, originally sold in Japan, often carry a price premium due to their rarity and local-market exclusivity. The 44mm case size wears large, but the lugless, cushion design helps it sit comfortably on the wrist.

Condition drives value: look for original dials with crisp sub-register printing, unpolished cases, and correct bracelet or leather strap. Replacement parts for the 6138 movement are still available, but original pushers and crowns can be hard to source. Water resistance is minimal by modern standards, so these are best kept away from moisture. The Bullhead’s quirky charm and mechanical pedigree make it a rewarding addition to any vintage Seiko collection.
