The Seiko Advan is a window into the exuberant side of 1970s Japanese watch design, when an everyday automatic could wear a dial that looked anything but ordinary. Collectors come for the saturated colors, unconventional layouts, and, on some versions, faceted crystals that make the dial change character as you turn your wrist.

There isn’t one definitive Advan look, so choose the design rather than treating the name as a single uniform model. A faceted-crystal version gives you the fullest expression of that experimentation; a less elaborate example lets the dial graphics do more of the talking. On the former, the crystal deserves particular attention: a replacement with different facets—or a plain crystal—can substantially alter the intended effect. Dial printing and the relationship between the hands and markers matter here, too; this is a watch whose personality depends on those details working together.
