The Seiko 7002 is the date-only bridge between the 6309 divers and the SKX generation, with rectangular hour markers that give it a distinctly spare face. Its crown tucked down at four and broad, rounded case deliver the familiar Seiko diver feel, but the uncluttered dial gives this generation a character of its own.

Produced from the late 1980s into the mid-1990s, the family includes earlier 150-metre divers and later 200-metre versions. The 7002-7030 is worth seeking out if you want the later specification, including a unidirectional bezel. The automatic 7002 movement neither hand-winds nor hacks.

The particular trap here is replacement furniture: aftermarket dials, hands and bezel inserts are widespread, sometimes assembled into combinations Seiko never supplied. For a collector-minded purchase, matching the dial’s depth rating and design to the case reference matters more than a freshly luminous face.
