The Seiko 6105 is a working diver with a distinctly off-center personality: its crown sits at four, tucked away from the wrist. The broad, asymmetric 6105-8110/8119 became known as the Captain Willard after Martin Sheen wore one in Apocalypse Now—but the case’s practical shape deserves as much attention as its screen credit.

The earlier 6105-8000/8009 has a slimmer, more restrained case; choose it if you prefer Seiko’s quieter side. The later version brings the sweeping crown guard and cushion-like outline most collectors associate with the name. Both have the spare, highly legible dial that makes these watches feel purposeful rather than ornamental.

Replacement dials, hands, and bezel inserts are common, so originality deserves particular scrutiny. On the later references, the crown’s unusual locking arrangement is another detail worth testing: it locks against a pin rather than screwing down, and worn or missing parts can leave it unsecured.

What owners love

The broad cushion case wears more comfortably than its 44mm diameter suggests. The crown at four o’clock stays out of the way, and the watch sits nicely on a rubber strap without feeling top-heavy.
The dial is wonderfully easy to read: large markers, distinct hands, and very little clutter. Owners often particularly like the seconds hand’s little luminous block—it gives an otherwise straightforward dial a recognizable detail.

Common Criticisms

The 6105 movement doesn’t hand-wind, so you can’t give it a few turns of the crown to get it going. Starting one from stopped means moving the watch to wind it through the rotor.
Replacement dials and hands are so widespread that finding one with its original appearance intact can be frustrating. Owners care about this because replacements can subtly change the lettering, markers, and character of the dial.
