Seiko 5 Superior is a broad family of automatic watches, not a single design stretched across a few dial colors. Its familiar Seiko 5 foundations lead in several directions: straightforward day-date watches, more assertive sports styling, and later models whose movements change both the dial layout and the experience at the crown.

The older 7S36-powered watches provide a useful starting point. This 23-jewel automatic has day and date displays, but neither hand-winding nor hacking seconds—an important distinction from later Seiko automatics. A marking such as 7S36-0140 identifies the caliber and case combination rather than a retail reference, which explains why Superior watches can appear under quite different kinds of identifiers.

Later references such as SSA005 bring another chapter. Its 4R37 adds hand-winding and hacking, while a 24-hour subdial replaces the older day-date arrangement with a different visual rhythm. Across the family, dial architecture and movement markings are more useful generational clues than the Superior name alone; even the separately grouped 5 Superior Whirlpool belongs to this wider, varied story.

What owners love

  • On the SSA005, owners particularly like the black waffle-textured dial, red accents and unusual 24-hour subdial at 12. There’s a lot going on, but those details are why people enjoy wearing it rather than wishing it looked simpler.
  • The SKZ040 has a mint-colored dial and two-tone case and bracelet that owners keep coming back to. Even owners who initially disliked that combination say it grew on them once they wore it.
