Explore Ressence

Ressence approaches watchmaking with an industrial designer’s eye: what if reading the time felt less like looking through a window and more like looking at a surface? Founded in 2010 by Benoît Mintiens, the brand replaces conventional hands with rotating discs. Its Ressence Orbital Convex System sends the smaller displays orbiting around the dial while each keeps its indications correctly oriented. The whole face is in motion, without looking busy.

The Type 1 makes that idea wonderfully legible, with rounded forms and a caseback used for winding and setting rather than a crown. The Type 3 takes it somewhere stranger: oil fills the upper chamber, visually dissolving the gap between dial and sapphire. Magnetic transmission connects that display to the mechanical movement in the separate, dry chamber below.

The Type 2 adds electronic time-setting assistance through its e-Crown system, while retaining a mechanical movement. For a quieter expression, the Type 8 pares the orbital display back to hours and minutes, giving its moving geometry room to breathe.
