The Raymond Weil Freelancer takes a familiar Swiss everyday watch and gives it a little mechanical theater—most notably in the RW1212 versions, whose exposed balance sits at six o’clock. That aperture is the reason to seek one out: you get the movement’s most animated component on the dial side without surrendering the whole face to skeletonization.

The Freelancer collection arrived in 2007; the RW1212, introduced in 2017 and developed with Sellita, gave it a more distinctive identity. Its balance bridge lends the opening a deliberate symmetry rather than the look of a hole cut into an otherwise finished dial. If that detail draws you in, distinguish these models from earlier open-heart Freelancers rather than treating every exposed-balance version as interchangeable. At 42.5mm, wrist presence is also part of the decision: this is worth trying on if your usual watch is appreciably smaller.
