The Oris Aquis 39.5 gives you the muscular shape of the larger Aquis without asking for quite so much wrist space. Its broad bezel, protected crown and closely fitted bracelet keep it looking like a purposeful diver rather than a big watch simply scaled down. The short lugs help it sit neatly, although the substantial case means it still has presence; this is compact, not delicate.

The version powered by the Oris 733 uses a familiar Sellita-based automatic, a straightforward choice if you prefer established mechanics to Oris’s newer in-house movements. Pay particular attention to the bracelet or rubber-strap configuration you want: the Aquis’s distinctive attachment makes swapping between them less casual than on a watch with conventional lugs. That close-fitting bracelet is part of the design’s charm, but it also makes the fit at the clasp worth getting right.

What owners love

  • The short lugs and sharply downturned bracelet make the 39.5 sit neatly on smaller wrists. It still feels substantial rather than like a scaled-down watch that has lost its character.
  • The dial has more depth in person than its straightforward layout suggests: the applied markers, polished hands and surrounding bezel give it plenty to look at without making it busy.

Common Criticisms

  • The proprietary strap attachment is the recurring frustration. You can't simply fit an ordinary 21mm strap, so changing the look means working within a much narrower selection of compatible straps.
  • The substantial bezel leaves a relatively small dial opening, so the 39.5 can look smaller than its diameter suggests. Owners who like the compact fit don't always like how little dial they get.
