Ultra-Chron

The Longines Ultra-Chron is a family united by high-frequency mechanical watchmaking, not by a single case or dial. Since its introduction in 1967, the name has appeared on restrained everyday watches and substantial divers, so an older Ultra-Chron can look quite unlike its modern descendants.

Early examples commonly use the automatic caliber 431, beating at 36,000 vibrations per hour—a brisk ten beats each second. The Ultra-Chron Vintage territory includes dressier designs as well as sportier watches, with case proportions and dial treatments that changed across generations. Date-equipped models are part of that history; the name alone does not establish either the layout or the movement inside.

The modern Ultra-Chron Hi-Beat 43mm, introduced in 2022, takes its cue from a 1968 Ultra-Chron diver: a broad cushion-shaped case, rotating bezel, black dial and conspicuous red minute hand. Its automatic caliber L836.6 retains the 36,000-vph rhythm, but the dial has no date. The later Ultra-Chron Carbon carries that modern high-frequency approach into a carbon case, making material—not merely dial styling—a meaningful distinction within the family.
