IWC’s Porsche Design watches made titanium more than a lightweight alternative to steel: the muted metal became part of a deliberately spare design language. The attraction is still wonderfully physical—clean dials, cases that flow into their bracelets, and surprisingly little weight on the wrist.

The collaboration produced distinctly different watches, so it pays to know which branch you want. The titanium chronograph introduced in 1980 pairs that restrained exterior with a busy stopwatch display; the Ocean 2000, introduced in 1982, takes the idea underwater, with rounded contours and a remarkably uncluttered dial. Neither needs polished surfaces to make its presence felt.

On bracelet-equipped examples, establish whether the fitted length suits your wrist and whether the correct additional links are available. These bracelets are integral to the design, not something easily replaced with a generic alternative; inspect their connecting hardware and clasp operation closely.
