Aquatimer

The IWC Aquatimer’s defining feature isn’t a single case size or movement, but the way it handles elapsed dive time: sometimes beneath the crystal, sometimes on an external bezel. That distinction gives this family several quite different personalities, from restrained twin-crown divers to broad-bezel chronographs with much more wrist presence.

The first Aquatimer arrived in 1967 with an internal rotating bezel, a layout revisited by later generations. The Aquatimer 3548 and Aquatimer Chronograph 3719 belong to the internal-bezel chapter, with timing scales protected under the crystal. The 2009 generation moved outward: watches such as the Aquatimer Chronograph 3767 use a prominent external bezel with a sapphire insert, giving the dial a more open appearance and the watch a distinctly different silhouette.

In 2014, IWC introduced SafeDive, linking an external turning ring to an internal timing bezel; the Aquatimer Chronograph 3768 belongs to this generation. Beyond those mechanical distinctions, expedition-themed versions add another layer of character: the Aquatimer Chronograph Expedition Charles Darwin uses bronze, while Aquatimer Chronograph Galapagos versions are distinguished by their black rubber-coated cases.
