Precision

The Gruen Precision is better understood as a family name than a single watch: the wording on the dial covers a wide range of designs and movements. For vintage-watch enthusiasts, that variety is part of the pleasure—two Precisions can share a signature yet have quite different personalities on the wrist.

Among vintage examples, a hand-wound version with small seconds is a good starting point if you enjoy restrained dress watches; an automatic offers a different mechanical character beneath similarly understated styling. Identify the movement before treating two examples as equivalent: “Precision” alone doesn’t tell you what’s inside. Pay particular attention to dial originality, since refinishing can erase the fine lettering that gives these watches much of their charm. Case markings also matter: gold-filled and solid-gold cases are not interchangeable descriptions.
