The Fortis Flieger is a pilot’s watch with an unusually direct personality: bold numerals, clear hands, and little to distract from reading the time. Enthusiasts gravitate to it for that instrument-like clarity, but the differences between generations make this a family worth getting to know.
Fortis introduced the Flieger in the late 1980s, and the earlier fixed-bezel automatics offer the cleaner, more traditional expression of the design. The newer F-41 takes a different approach, adding a rotating 12-hour bezel for tracking another time zone and an orange synchronization marking around twelve. Choose the earlier style for simplicity; choose the newer one if you’ll actually use the bezel.
On older examples, pay attention to the luminous material: aged tritium and later luminous compounds give these otherwise similar dials distinctly different characters, especially after dark.
