Must de Cartier is a family name, not a single set of dimensions or a movement specification: it brings together Cartier’s familiar design language with considerable variety beneath the dial. The rectangular Must de Cartier Tank is its best-known expression, but round designs such as the Must de Cartier Vendôme and Must de Cartier Colisée belong to the story too.

The Must collection emerged in the 1970s, with the Tank joining in 1977. Gold-plated sterling silver—vermeil—became a defining material for many early watches, giving them a construction distinct from solid-gold Cartier models. Dials could be surprisingly spare: lacquered designs dispensed with the usual Roman numerals, while other versions retained the more familiar numbered layout. Those differences change the character of the watch as much as its size does.

Hand-wound and quartz movements both appear across the family’s long run. Case proportions, dial signatures, and movement type help distinguish generations that can look closely related at first glance. The modern steel Tank Must, introduced in 2021, is a later chapter rather than another name for the vintage vermeil watches.
