The Breguet Tradition puts the movement where you would normally expect a dial: bridges, wheels and the balance surround a small, engine-turned display for the hours and minutes. It is less about seeing through a watch than seeing how one is built, with an architecture inspired by Breguet’s early subscription watches rather than a conventional skeletonized movement.

The collection arrived in 2005, and the hand-wound 7057 is a natural starting point if you want that exposed machinery with few distractions; its dial-side power-reserve indicator gives the composition a useful extra detail. The automatic 7097 adds retrograde seconds, whose hand returns to the beginning of its arc each minute. Choose between them partly by how you like to interact with a watch: winding the 7057 yourself, or watching the 7097 repeatedly trace and reset that seconds arc. On the latter, that return should be crisp and consistent.

What owners love

The exposed movement is the reason to own it: you can watch the balance working from the dial side, and the bridges and wheels give it real depth. It stays interesting long after you’ve learned where everything sits.
The little off-centre, engine-turned dial gives the mechanical display a surprisingly traditional counterpoint. Owners love that combination of an old-fashioned watch face and an unusually open view of the machinery.

Common Criticisms

The actual time display is small for a 40mm watch. Reading it can take a more deliberate look than you’d expect, especially if your near vision isn’t what it used to be.
